Who are the Maplewood Garden Angels/ Fort Wayne Urban Farmers?
Two weeks ago this coming Saturday, my son, Chris and I drove my grandsons, Ty and Truth out to a new community garden project close to the Fellowship Missionary Church. The project is being conducted by The Garden Angels/ Fort Wayne Urban Farmers.
For those who are not aware, the Maplewood Garden Angels/ Fort Wayne Urban Farmers is a wellness, fitness, and health program that has been in existence in the Fort Wayne community for 13 years.
The organization is made up of 20 young people and 10 adults who have made it their mission to reduce hunger in the community by using organic gardening techniques and by using their personal energy for the benefit of senior citizens and children.
Last year the Garden Angels donated over 2,000 pounds of produce to the Community Harvest Food Bank.
The goal this year ( 2013) is to network with churches who would set up Gleaning Teams and pick vegetables for their senior citizens and disabled church members.
The Garden Angels meet twice a week during the summer on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm.
Watch this blog, and our Facebook page for more information or to get in touch with our members as we "agricise" ( agricultural motivated exercise) through the summer.
As the founder and creator of the The Green ABC's I enjoy the idea of kids and adults getting out in the community and helping to reduce hunger by creating a beautiful community garden. Including our kids in this project exposes them to an area of life they may not have the opportunity to explore.
Both of my grandsons had a ball that day, digging up worms, shoveling, and sitting on the tractor by the barn. Please follow this blog and our Facebook page as this 13th year progresses and produces food for our hungry, and an exciting opportunity for our active adults and kids.
